Mary Donahue Means Winter

Writer's picture: marthaengbermarthaengber

Winter is most definitely the time to think about Mary Donahue, who, at the age of 15, is heading into the blizzard winter of 1978-79, not expecting what’s about to hit.

A few facts about the Jan. 13 - 14, 1979 Chicago storm:

Only 2 inches of snow were supposed to fall. Instead, 21 inches fell in 38 hours. Five people died. Flights were grounded at O’Hare Airport for 96 hours.

Here’s to hoping all of you travel safely through this holiday season!
