I’m not Chinese, but for a long time now have lived in an area with a huge Chinese population and have loved the culture those in my community bring. Food, music, the grocery stores where they make fresh pork buns. The local groups that practice tai chi in the park.
Only recently did I learn about the flowers and fruits people buy to bring good luck: tangerines or a kumquat tree for wealth and good luck; willows for growth and prosperity; and bamboo for strength, among others.
This is the Year of the Snake, a time for renewal and transformation, which means letting go of old habits and embracing new ideas. Sounds good to me!
Gong hei fat choy to all of you who celebrate such a rich heritage!
