When I went to journalism school, the maxim was, “Question everything.” I still follow that rule, not only when writing, but when reading anything.
My first step is to find out the source. If I don’t know the organization/blog, I look it up to see who’s funding the endeavor. If I can't determine that, I disregard the information.
A second tip is to avoid relying on any one source/news channel/platform. Vet five reliable sources that have articles on the same topic. The truth of what's going on will be somewhere within the information and perspectives offered.
My son also directed me to Ground News, a news aggregate website that lists a variety of articles on any given topic, along with the sources and whether those sources leans right, center or left.
How do you vet your information?
