Female Heroes: Pino and Boudica

Writer: marthaengbermarthaengber

When taking part in the American Historical Novel Facebook page holiday giveaway some months ago, I asked readers who their female heroes were, and most automatically and enthusiastically listed mothers, sisters and aunts.

I got to chatting with one reader and she referred me to Boudica, a female warrior of Welsh lore, and specifically, a queen of the ancient Iceni tribe who fought back against the encroaching Roman Empire in 60 AD.

That piqued my interest, since my grandmother was Welsh. I came to learn that Pino, the female warrior in THE FALCON, THE WOLF AND THE HUMMINGBIRD, has a lot in common with Boudica, and with all of the other female warriors in our lives who:

  • endured serious trauma

  • fought back against an aggressor, whether a bully, oppressor or physical ailment

  • exhibited immense bravery

My female heroes are my sisters and daughter, along with all other women who support other women.

Who are your female heroes?
