Book Review: "Landed: A Yogi's Memoir in Pieces and Poses"

by Jennifer Lang

I love yoga, I love stories of the heart and I love hearing about the fascinating, yet complicated paths people take to achieve peace, and Jennifer Lang’s LANDED: A YOGI'S MEMOIR IN PIECES AND POSES is all that.

The book stems from the simple, yet momentous event many of us experience (if we’re lucky): falling in love. In this case, the author ties her fate to a French man who follows her to America, but dreams of returning to live in Israel where the two lived for a short while when in the first throws of their young life as a couple.

After fifteen years in the US, and rearing three children to their teen years, the author makes a deal: she’ll return to Israel, but do so on her own terms. Where her husband cherishes a religious Jewish lifestyle, she’ll practice a secular one.

But of course the move is not so simple, but instead a complex network of bending, turning and twisting to make the new country — and the couple’s changing relationship — feel right. She watches her children acclimate, or not. She deals with the constant stress of living in a country often at strife with its neighbors. Through it all, the author, who’s also a yoga instructor, clings to her practice for calm, understanding and peace.

Told in flash nonfiction (very short pieces), the prose sings with the lightness, darkness and in between rainbow colors that reflect a woman determined to allow love to win.
